    A network-oriented programming language invented by Sun Microsystems that is specifically designed for writing programs that can be run on a variety of operating systems.

  • Joint Tactical Radio System
    The Joint Tactical Radio System (JTRS) is a software radio that will work with many existing military and civilian radios. It includes integrated encryption and wideband networking software to create mobile ad hoc networks and is the next-generation voice-and-data radio planned for use by the US military after 2010.

  • Josephson Junction (JJ)
    A thin insulating layer surrounded by superconducting material in a superconducting circuit. This thin layer has an unusual I-V characteristic (known as the Josephson effect) which can be utilized to build SQUIDs (very sensitive magnetometers) or to design qubits and other quantum devices.

  • JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group)
    The name of the committee that designed the photographic image-compression standard. JPEG is optimized for compressing full-color or gray-scale photographic-type, digital images.
