ANCS is a BBN program with the U.S. Army Battle Lab at Ft. Gordon to provide a testbed for evaluating Voice over IP (VoIP) technologies. VoIP is quickly becoming the basis for the U.S. Army's next-generation Area Communications architecture. The ANCS architecture relies on Voice over IP technology to provide a seamless IP interface throughout the tactical Area of Operations. ANCS provides converged voice, data, and multimedia communications with BBN-developed Quality of Service (QoS) guarantees. Differentiated Services (DiffServ) queuing is an integral part of the ANCS architecture, which was designed by BBN to handle specific tactical scenarios. As part of the ANCS project, BBN designed and built the Combat Network Radio VoIP Gateway, which provides a seamless interface between wireless and wireline VoIP subscribers.
