Overview

Scientists and medical researchers rely on timely, accurate and complete data to make decisions that improve our health and enhance our quality of life. Yet, today, vast amounts of healthcare data remain locked in proprietary clinical systems.

Unlocking clinical information and making it available and usable to the healthcare community will profoundly speed our rate of discovery and potential for improving care while dramatically reducing healthcare expenditures.

With the mission to leverage BBN’s experience and innovative technologies to advance medical research and clinical care knowledge, BBN launched Healthcare Informatics (HCI). HCI is working with data partners to aggregate, normalize and analyze de-identified clinical information across health systems, hospitals and ambulatory groups nationwide to deliver real-time information capabilities to the healthcare industry.

Exploiting BBN’s groundbreaking technologies in the areas of natural language processing, data mining, machine learning, semantic web, visualization and privacy and security, HCI developed the LIFESight™ data integration and analytics platform. Through the integration, normalization and analysis of large-scale patient information, the LIFESight platform can:

  • Visualize early-warning trends that indicate the potential outbreak of disease, the side-effects of a new drug or the onset of a bioterrorism event.

  • Use large-scale de-identified clinical data to transform the way in which medical treatment procedures and interventions are compared, assessed and monitored.

  • Deliver information to reduce healthcare expenditure growth by identifying and monitoring best practices that equate to better outcomes.

Just as BBN’s development of the ARPANET, predecessor to the Internet, brought new and unthinkable capabilities to our everyday lives – HCI’s integration and analysis of large-scale clinical information will promote healthcare reform.
