Principal Engineer Ray Tomlinson Inducted into Internet Hall of Fame
Ray Tomlinson was among the first inductees into the Internet Hall of Fame for his invention of email. Tomlinson made the historic choice to separate the name of his message’s recipient from the name of the host computer using the @ symbol, now one of the most universally recognized digital icons on the planet.

Chief Scientist Jim Barger Elected to NAE
Election to the National Academy of Engineering is among the highest professional distinctions accorded to an engineer and honors those who have made outstanding contributions to engineering research, practice, or education. Dr. Barger’s NAE citation reads, “For applications of acoustic technology and engineering solutions for the benefit of national security and society.”

Raytheon BBN Technologies scientist Saikat Guha earned the NASA Tech Brief Award for his paper, “Phase-conjugate receiver for Gaussian-state quantum illumination,” which was published in the NASA Tech Briefs magazine.

Serious Games Showcase & Challenge
Raytheon BBN’s VESSEL Damage Control Trainer won the Serious Games Showcase & Challenge in the business category at the Annual Interservice/Industry Training, Simulation and Education Conference (I/ITSEC), the world’s largest modeling and simulation conference. VESSEL is an immersive, game-based training environment that teaches damage control skills, shipboard communication and shipboard navigation to U.S. Navy recruits, without the costs and risks involved with live training.

Dr. Leo Beranek wins National Medal of Science
Dr. Leo Beranek, a renowned acoustical scientist and one of the three co-founders of Raytheon BBN Technologies received one of the highest honors bestowed on scientists in this country -- the National Medal of Science.The National Medal of Science honors individuals for pioneering scientific research that has led to a better understanding of the world around us, as well as to the innovations and technologies that give the United States its global economic edge. In bestowing the medal, President Bush cited Beranek for his leadership, dedication and contributions to the art and science of acoustics; for co-founding one of the world's foremost acoustical research and consulting firms; and for sustained contributions to scientific societies and civic organizations.

Raytheon BBN Technologies Earns SBA Award of Distinction
Raytheon BBN Technologies Technologies earned the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) Award of Distinction. This award was initiated in 1985 to recognize federal contractors that have exceptional small business subcontracting programs. Less than 2% of the SBA's portfolio of 2,500 federal contractors have earned this award. The SBA reviews companies to ensure compliance with subcontracting laws and regulations and rates each company from unsatisfactory to outstanding. Only companies rated outstanding may be nominated for the Award of Distinction.

Raytheon BBN Technologies Audio Indexer Wins Best of Show
Raytheon BBN's Audio Indexer, a system for creating indexed, searchable transcriptions of any audio source--telephone calls, speeches, radio and television broadcasts, teleconferences, and meetings--in English, Spanish, Chinese, or Arabic in real-time on standard PC hardware, won a Best of Show Award at the Spring Computer Telephony Expo 2002.

University of Michigan Richard W. Pew Collegiate Professorship in Human Computer Interaction
The University of Michigan named a collegiate chair in honor of Raytheon BBN Technologies Principal Scientist, Richard Pew. The chair honors Pew for his work in human factors, human-computer interaction, human performance, and experimental psychology. His work includes a professorship in the University of Michigan department of psychology from 1963 to 1974, where his work focused on the timing and control of motor performance and led to the development of a series of models of human performance and the study of performance in applied settings; development of one of the earliest "style guides" for user interfaces in 1975; design and implementation of one of the first usability labs at the Social Security Administration in 1978-79; leading a pioneering study of decision making in nuclear power plant control rooms that laid the foundation for future computer decision aiding in power plants; and serving as the first Chair of the National Research Council's Standing Committee on Human Factors.

ACM/SIGCOMM Best Student Paper Award
Alex Snoeren of Raytheon BBN's Internetwork Research department, and an M.I.T Ph.D. candidate, won the best student paper award for "Hash-Based IP Traceback" (co-authored with Raytheon BBN Technologies colleagues Craig Partridge, Luis Sanchez, Christine Jones, Fabrice Tchakountio, Steve Kent, and Tim Strayer), presented at the ACM/SIGCOMM 2001 Conference on Applications, Technologies, Architectures, and Protocols for Computer Communication, August 27-31, 2001 in San Diego, CA.

The NASA New England Outreach Center honored John Forcucci, Small Business Program Manager at Raytheon BBN Technologies, with the Commitment to Excellence Award at a ceremony during the 10th NASA Technology and Business Conference, held in Providence, Rhode Island. The award recognizes Forcucci's advocacy of small businesses in the Northeast.

Webby Award for Lifetime Achievement
Ray Tomlinson, principal engineer at Raytheon BBN Technologies, received an International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences Webby Award for Lifetime Achievement at the 5th Annual Webby Awards ceremony at the War Memorial Opera House in San Francisco on July 18, 2001. The Webby Lifetime Achievement award honors Tomlinson for a lifetime of Internet and computer networking achievements.

SISO Outstanding Paper Certificate
Sandra Spector and Yvette Tenney, Raytheon BBN Technologies Human Factors Specialists, earned an Outstanding Paper certificate for their work, "Comparisons of HBR Models with Human-in-the-loop Performance in a Simplified Air Traffic Control Simulation with and without HLA Protocols: Task Simulation, Human Data and Results" from the Simulation Interoperability Standards Organization (SISO). The paper was presented at the 10th Conference on Computer Generated Forces and Behavioral Representation, May 15-17, 2001 in Norfolk, VA.

Raytheon BBN Technologies' speech and language processing scientists Bernhard Suhm and Patrick Peterson were awarded Honorable Mention for the Best Paper Award for their presentation of "Evaluating Cost Effectiveness and Usability of Telephone User Interfaces" at the VIOS 2001 conference in San Jose, CA.

Contractor Awards
Raytheon BBN Technologies earned two Defense Contract Management Boston awards. The U.S. government encourages its contractors to direct at least 5% of their outsourced work to minority-owned businesses. Raytheon BBN Technologies was recognized for both exceeding the 5% goal in 2000 and again for exceeding the goal for three consecutive years.

Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) Editor's Certificate
Raytheon BBN Technologies Division Scientist David Getty received the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) Editor's Certificate in 2000 for the fifth consecutive year. Getty serves as an editorial consultant to RadioGraphics, a radiology journal published by RSNA, and has been reviewing articles for the journal on a regular basis for the past five years.
The award citation reads: "For outstanding service to RSNA and RadioGraphics." -

John Makhoul, a Chief Scientist at Raytheon BBN Technologies, was awarded an IEEE Third Millennium medal at a ceremony during the IEEE International Conference on Acoustics, Speech, and Signal Processing in Istanbul, Turkey. Makhoul earned this medal for his seminal research in, and outstanding contributions, to the field of speech and language processing.

Ray Tomlinson, a Principal Scientist at Raytheon BBN Technologies, was honored for inventing email by the American Computer Museum and the Computer Science Department of Montana State University-Bozeman. Tomlinson received the George R. Stibitz Computer Pioneer Award at ceremonies held at the Gallatin Inn in Gallatin Gateway, Montana. The award is given to outstanding computer pioneers.
