BBN Technologies Awarded $1.2 Million in Defense Funding to Help US Army Monitor Foreign Media

— BBN Technologies, an advanced technology solutions firm, has been awarded a Department of the Army contract in the amount of $1,181,295 for delivery of two of turn-key Multimedia Monitoring Systems capable of monitoring broadcast news from television, satellite radio, and the Web.

The BBN Multimedia Monitoring System (M3S) is a media monitoring and translation solution that integrates BBN’s broadcast and web monitoring capabilities in a distributed, scalable architecture for monitoring foreign language television, satellite radio, and web sites. The M3S gives English speakers direct access to foreign language multimedia by creating a continuous, searchable archive of international broadcasts and web sites. The system automatically transcribes and translates real-time audio streams and extracted content from selected web sites. Both the transcript and translation are searchable in a web user interface. The technology allows users to sift through vast collections of news content in other languages quickly and efficiently.

"BBN’s Multimedia Monitoring Systems help break down the language barrier and increase our understanding of the news, events, and responses that shape attitudes around the world," said Tad Elmer, CEO and president, BBN Technologies. "That understanding is critical to our military’s ability to operate effectively around the world."
