Humedica Teams with BBN Technologies to Provide Highly Secure, Next-Generation Clinical Informatics Solutions to the Federal Government
Two Massachusetts firms announce strategic relationship that combines renowned technology expertise with extensive health care experience.
Boston, Mass. and Cambridge, Mass., October 21, 2009 — Humedica, a next-generation clinical informatics company, and BBN Technologies, an advanced technology solutions firm, today announced they have entered into an extensive collaborative agreement. Through this strategic relationship, Humedica is leveraging BBN’s renowned technology expertise, including areas such as privacy and security as well as natural language processing (NLP), to build its advanced and highly secure novel clinical informatics platform. This multi-year agreement also allows BBN to provide federal government agencies with health care analytic solutions powered by Humedica’s clinical data.
"For decades, BBN’s groundbreaking technologies have addressed some of the most significant challenges facing the defense and intelligence communities. Applying BBN’s knowledge base and expertise in areas such as NLP to Humedica’s leading clinical informatics capabilities offers incredible opportunities to more accurately understand patient care," said Kenneth Novack, chairman of Humedica and board member of BBN Technologies. "BBN’s NLP technology has the ability to process large quantities of unstructured documents, such as medical reports and physician notes."
For more than 60 years, BBN has been at the forefront of research and development in privacy and security, with a particular focus on creating national security standards and protecting the government’s security interests. BBN’s Healthcare Informatics (HCI) division is now leveraging the firm’s deep experience and innovative technologies to advance medical research and clinical informatics. Having access to Humedica’s 2 nationwide, de-identified longitudinal patient database, BBN HCI is able to provide federal agencies with the capability to improve drug and product safety monitoring and early-warning public health surveillance efforts. For example, government agencies can more quickly and accurately detect the potential outbreak of a disease, the onset of a bioterrorism event, or the negative side effect of a new drug. Together, Humedica and BBN HCI also aim to transform the way in which medical treatment procedures and interventions are compared, assessed and monitored.
"BBN has a long and storied history of developing solutions to solve difficult problems with deep technology expertise. Working closely with Humedica, BBN HCI is leveraging Humedica’s data and next-generation clinical solutions as well as creating powerful clinical informatics applications geared specifically for federal agencies," said Dr. Richard Upton, executive vice president, BBN Healthcare Informatics. "Humedica offers a truly longitudinal, de-identified and comprehensive view of patient information across the health care continuum, including data from health systems, hospitals and ambulatory groups nationwide. This combination of clinical and technology expertise will profoundly improve the safety and efficiency of health care delivery."
Through this collaboration, Humedica is applying BBN’s technology expertise towards the ongoing development of a next-generation clinical informatics platform. The platform’s state-of-the-art security model is built upon the strictest standards to exceed industry privacy and security standards and is designed to effectively handle protected health information (PHI) in a HIPAA-compliant environment.
"BBN has been at the forefront of research and development in the areas of privacy and security, speech and language processing, and surveillance systems for over half a century," said Michael Weintraub, president and CEO of Humedica. "BBN’s long-standing record of delivering cutting-edge technology solutions to the federal government makes them ideally positioned to provide federal agencies health care analytic solutions utilizing Humedica’s clinical data."
