BBN Technologies Receives Societal Impact Award for Stereoscopic Digital Mammography At The 2007 MITX Technology Awards
4th Annual Awards Honor Technology Innovation in New England
Cambridge, Mass., June 11, 2007 — BBN Technologies was honored with a Societal Impact Award at the 2007 MITX Technology Awards. The MITX Technology Awards, presented by the Massachusetts Innovation & Technology Exchange, recognize innovative technologies developed in the New England area as well as the individuals and organizations responsible for driving these advancements. The Societal Impact Award honors a company for the development of a break-though technology or product that dramatically improves people's lives and society as a whole. BBN was honored for the development of Stereo Digital Mammography (SDM), a pioneering technology that can save lives through the early detection of breast cancer. Honorees for this year's awards were announced June 5, 2007 in a ceremony at The Four Season’s Hotel in Boston.
"We have been extremely impressed with the breadth and quality of the nominations this year. They show incredible innovation across a variety of sectors and highlight the vitality of our local technology community," said Kiki Mills, executive director of MITX. "As we continue to enjoy a surge in technology investments in New England, we are proud to showcase the contributions our community is making to global technology development."
BBN's patented Stereoscopic Digital Mammography (SDM) system, which is currently in clinical trials, has been shown to dramatically improve radiologists' ability to identify suspicious lesions in the breast and improve early detection of breast cancer. The stereo mammogram, which allows the radiologist to view the internal structure of the breast directly and in depth, eliminates the limitations of standard mammography. In the stereo image, separating the layers of superimposed tissue reduces both the masking of true lesions and the number of false positive detections.
"BBN Technologies is the only company currently conducting clinical trials of Stereo Digital Mammography," said David Getty, division scientist at BBN Technologies and the principal developer of the technology. "SDM will greatly improve early detection of breast cancer through its ability to provide the radiologist with a true, direct, in-depth view of the breast volume."
More than 200 of the region's top technology and business professionals attended the MITX Awards ceremony. The event also included a keynote address by Tim Berners-Lee, director of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), who was inducted into the MITX Innovation Hall of Fame, as well as a panel forum on "What's Next for the Device Web – Emerging User Experiences."
