BBN Technologies Announces New Healthcare Initiative Led by Dr. Richard Upton
Cambridge, Mass., March 12, 2007 — BBN Technologies, an advanced technology solutions firm, has announced that Richard A. Upton, Ph.D. has joined the company to investigate a new potential market focused on healthcare informatics. Upton will mine BBN's extensive expertise in intelligent systems, speech recognition, natural language processing, distributed information sharing, and network security to identify solutions that enable enhanced, more cost effective care. For example, a system integrating BBN's technology expertise could allow a patient, who is vacationing far from home, to receive emergency treatment from medical professionals who have access to his complete medical history - including allergies, current medications, and previous treatments. Furthermore, the system would ensure that only those medical personnel who have a "need to know" are able to access this information.
Before joining BBN, Upton was responsible for all business development and strategy for a BAE Systems North America line of business as Vice President, Business Development, National Security Solutions. In his previous position as Vice President, Marketing and Strategic Development at ALPHATECH, Upton played a key role in quadrupling revenues and funding over a five-year period, while helping the company enter new strategic markets. ALPHATECH's performance led to BAE's November 2004 acquisition of the company for double its then current revenue.
Tad Elmer, president and CEO, BBN Technologies, said, "Ric's experience in developing new business areas, combined with his technical expertise and market savvy, makes him the ideal leader to investigate new markets for BBN's technologies. Ric is uniquely qualified to manage the transition of BBN's technologies into advanced solutions, and we are fortunate to have him on our team."
"BBN is very appealing because of its formidable technical base, potential for significant growth, and solid financial backing" Upton said. "This combination offers a unique opportunity to do exciting work in a critically important field and make an impact."
Upton earned his B.A. in Mathematics and M.S. in Computer and Information Sciences at the University of Pennsylvania. He earned his Ph.D. in Computer Science at the University of Maryland and sits on the board of advisors for the Computer Science Department today. Upton is also on the board of advisors of two start-up companies focusing on security, privacy, and identity management.
