3rd Annual MITX Technology Awards Honor Leading Technology Advancements in The New England Region

BBN Technologies Awarded for Best Communication/ Collaboration Technology at the 2006 MITX Technology Awards

— BBN Technologies, an advanced technology and research and development firm, has been selected as a winner in the category of Communications/Collaboration for the 2006 MITX Technology Awards. The MITX Technology Awards, produced by the Massachusetts Innovation & Technology Exchange, recognize innovative technologies developed in the New England area, as well as the individuals and organizations responsible for driving these advancements. Honorees for this year's awards were announced last night in a ceremony at The Four Season's Hotel in Boston.

"The MITX Technology Awards celebrate innovation in our community and confirm that great technologies for building digital businesses are being created in New England," said Kiki Mills, executive director of MITX. "This year's honorees competed against more nominees than ever before and are very deserving of the recognition these awards bestow.".

The BBN Broadcast Monitoring System creates a continuous searchable archive of international TV broadcasts. Both the transcript and translation are searchable and synchronized to the video, providing powerful capabilities for effective retrieval and precise playback of the video based on its speech content. Search terms are highlighted in the results, which show an image thumbnail, the transcript segment in the original language, and its machine translation. Clicking on a result begins playback of the segment. Users can sift through vast collections of news content in other languages quickly and efficiently. The interface allows analysts and decision makers to search for specific spoken content in the video archive through keyword queries in English or the source language and get up to date information.

Jean Duffy, Vice President, Speech & Language Processing, BBN Technologies, said, "It is extremely gratifying that MITX has recognized the remarkable achievement that the Broadcast Monitoring represents. This is a unique technology that allows us to understand, without the use of scarce human translators, what is going on in parts of the world where understanding is most critical, and most elusive."

The Awards were presented last night at a ceremony at the Four Seasons Hotel attended by 200 of the region's top technology and business professionals. Additional award honorees included Nicholas Negroponte, Chairman, One Laptop Per Child and the Co-Founder of the MIT Media Lab, who was inducted into the MITX Innovation Hall of Fame.
