Court Settlement Bars Unauthorized Use of BBN’s Audio Indexer™ Product
BBN Technologies Wins Intellectual Property Suit
Cambridge, Mass., February 6, 2006 — BBN Technologies, an advanced technology and research and development firm, announced today that in a settlement negotiated in an Austrian court, SAIL Labs Technology AG, a terminated distributor of BBN’s Audio Indexer™ product, has agreed to cease and desist from offering products that incorporate elements of BBN’s Audio Indexer. In addition, the settlement requires that SAIL Labs provide BBN a verified accounting of its unauthorized distribution, pay BBN a reasonable royalty for its unauthorized distribution, and reimburse BBN for legal costs. BBN obtained a temporary injunction against SAIL Labs last year preventing its unauthorized distribution activities; this settlement provides BBN permanent protection against SAIL Labs’ unlawful use of Audio Indexer.
"We are gratified that our rights have been recognized and vindicated by the Austrian legal system," said Tad Elmer, president and CEO, BBN Technologies. "BBN’s intellectual property is a critical strategic asset, and we will use the full power of the courts, regardless of jurisdiction, to protect it against illegal use." SAIL Labs claims that the software that it is currently marketing no longer includes elements of BBN’s proprietary software.
BBN’s Audio Indexer system creates rich transcripts of speech from recorded audio files using BBN’s proprietary state-of-the-art speech recognition. The system is available for broadcast news transmitted over wideband digital satellite or cable channels in multiple languages, including English, Arabic, and Chinese. Audio Indexer produces transcripts that highlight the names of people, locations, and organizations; separates the speakers; and indexes each word in the transcript to its location in the audio file to enable precisely-positioned retrieval and playback.
