GENI & US Ignite

Chip Elliott, a Chief Engineer at Raytheon BBN Technologies, is also the GENI Project Director and leads the GENI Program office, which is based at BBN’s Cambridge campus. Last month, he was in DC for the launch of US Ignite, a White House initiative to foster innovation and novel public sector applications and services on ultra-fast, software-defined networks. In a video taken that day, Chip explains how GENI enables researchers to use “slices” of the Internet to develop cool new applications. Watch it on the National Science Foundation website.

Because A Red Herring Is Not A Fish

Raytheon BBN Technologies is launching a project to collect metaphors from around the world as part of groundbreaking new research into languages.

The goal is to create analysis tools and techniques that will automatically find, identify and categorize linguistic metaphors in large amounts of foreign language text to provide new insight into the underlying cultural beliefs, and worldviews that metaphors reveal.

Under the contract from the Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Activity via the U.S. Army Research Laboratory, the Raytheon BBN team will:

  • Develop tools and techniques to identify, qualify and categorize metaphors
  • Build a metaphor repository that identifies and links key elements of linguistic metaphors to the conceptual metaphor
  • Develop a fully functional metaphorical language analysis system
